Mandatory reading for all stoners

A summary: a cannabis-like substance, anandamide, was studied by two scientists from Germany and UC-Irvine. They found that this substance is produced by the brain in response to possible psychotic episodes. The worse someone's schizophrenia is, the less anandamide was found in the brain during episodes. Unfortunately, the study also found "anandamide levels lowest in people with schizophrenia who used cannabis more frequently, suggesting it may disrupt the system."

The article asserts that we are all psychotic to some extent; most are just not sufficiently so to be diagnosed.

Well, there are a lot of psychoactive drugs that over time decrease the sensitivity of the receptors they bind to; that's one of the things that can make them addictive. It's possible that with the schizophrenics (whether natural or cannabis-induced) you're looking at something a little bit similar to Type II Diabetics who have insulin in their blood but are resistant to it. Their brains might be pumping out anandamide as fast as they can, but sensitivity to it has been worn away so it's not longer helping.
