Those of you who keep splenda-full drinks in your household...

Do you make an effort to keep your consumption of them to a limit (say, one can a day), or do you just drink 'em when you want 'em? If you have a limit you try to stick to, what is that limit?

I don't do a hard limit on the amount of Splenda I consume. At the same time, most of the liquid I take in over an average day is water. I range from zero to (on rare occasions) five Splenda-sweetened drinks a day. I notice no difference in how other things are with me when I do one extreme or a point in between.

I've started sweetening my coffee with half-Splenda, half-sugar. I'm continuing with my rule of at least one mug of water for each mug of coffee. (I usually have two cups of coffee, and 2 to 4 of water, in a workday. Then some more water at home, and often a glass Ovaltine.)

i consume a fair amount of the stuff, though not generally in the form of soda; i pop it into my tea and use it instead of sugar in pretty much everything i cook. i think that the cocoa i drink is also splenda-ful and i tend to have 1 or 2 packets a day.

I don't think Splenda tastes any better than Aspartame -- neither is pleasant -- so I rarely consume either. But I do try to make sure at least half the liquid I consume every day, if not that much again, is pure water, and in general, I try not to have more than a soda or two a day on a big soda day.

Thru the WW thing, I find it really hard to consume my points/calories thru fluid. That said, I have about a 1/2 cup of coffee a day (aspartame) and one non-water drink (diet soda). The rest is water. Between (at least) 48-64oz

That all said, I don't try to limit my sweeteners, I try to up my water.

[livejournal.com profile] dawnd would be a good person to ask about this. I seem to recall she has information about drinks with that sweetener.
good luck.

I know of no particular reason to limit one's intake of Splenda. OTOH, we didn't used to know that aspartame was bad, either. So who knows what might come up in future research. Also, there are lo-carb diet sites out there that claim that, for some people, even the TASTE of something sweet will cause an insulin surge and therefore weight gain (or at least lack of weight loss). I suspect this is also very individual. YMMV, etc.

That said, I DO know that there is a difference between the packet kind, and the kind that comes in the box, as well as the kind that comes in diet drinks etc.

The stuff in diet drinks is "pure" Splenda, though sometimes they will use two or more sweeteners, especially Acesulfame Potassium. The safety profile of Ace-K is less good than that of Splenda, last time I looked. OTOH, it's better than aspartame. Diet Rite has a combination of Splenda and Ace-K, unless they've changed their composition in the last couple of months. Diet Hansen's is Splenda only, I believe.

The bulk stuff in the box has Splenda and maltodextrin in it. It seems to treat most people OK, and doesn't spike insulin response. (Maltodextrin is metabolized much more slowly than its related sugars).

The stuff in the PACKETS, however, is not as good. If you read the ingredients, you will see that they also contain DEXTROSE, which is, of course, a sugar. This explains why my dad (who is diabetic, diagnosed only a couple of years ago) experienced trouble with his blood sugar when he used the packets in his coffee, for instance, but not when he spooned the stuff out of the "sugar" bowl at home.

So there you are. Hope this is helpful info.

Good splenda-soda?

Have you found any good splenda-sweetened sodas? Last time I looked in this area, I only found one brand, which had a really odd aftertaste.

So now I drink mostly splenda-sweetened fruit2o, but I haven't found anything for when I'm in a cola mood, or anything good with my daily dose of caffene :(

There's a house brand diet cola at Costco that uses Splenda, I hear. I've never tried it, as I don't do caffeine. Diet RC Cola also uses Splenda and has caffeine (as opposed to Diet Rite, which has no caffeine).
