This morning (afternoon actually) I stubbed my baby toe really really hard.

It still hurts to move it. It looks a teensy bit swollen, but barely perceptible.

It was stubbed in such a way that it was pulled away from the foot a little.

I'm pretty sure I can't have broken it, but out of curiosity, has anyone out there broken a toe, and if so, what will it be like? That is, should there be huge amounts of swelling and difficulty standing on the foot and unbearable pain when I try to move it, or is the medium pain when moving the toe and no difficulty standing possibly a break?

It's pretty hard to tell a broken toe from one that's just mashed up badly... In any case, even if it is broken, if you went to a doctor they'd likely just tape it to the next toe over. You can do that yourself -- you could even grab some popsicle sticks and splint everything in place, if you want to get fancy. Regardless, I'd try to avoid putting weight on it. If you can find a walking stick or crutch, that would probably help.

I've broken and sprained toes A LOT (I went barefoot as often as possible in FLorida). When I break the big or pointer toes, there's usually a moment of feeling like I'm going to puke immediately after the incident, bad crunches lack that but otherwise feel the same for the first few hours for me. I don't remember the first times I broke the other 3 on either foot, but I usually can't tell the difference between a crunch, sprain, break, or just minor trauma until time passes and I see how fast it clears up. And no matter what the case, you still do the same thing with it - keep it still. I'd usually just tape or band-aid in a pinch it to the toe(s) next to it, and baby it. I could usually call it a break at about 3 days, often by actually prodding the bone at that point.

Friend of mine thought she had just stubbed her toe but it was broken... if the swelling doens't go down in 24 hours, see a doc

When I broke a toe in high school, the doctor just told me to buy a pair of shoes with wooden soles (or something else stiff) so that the toe wouldn't bend when I walked.

I'm pretty sure I fractured another toe a couple years later, but I just pulled out those shoes, and it got better.

i went to the hospital for my busted toe... they just told me to take ibuprofen and keep the toe iced and elevated as much as possible. since it was my big toe they said there was no point in trying to tape it. *shrug*

i had to stay away from any shoes that weren't big sneakers for a long while....(you've seen my platforms so that was a major bummer for me!) it sucked walking around on my broken toe for the first 2 months or so...but it gradually got better.

I broke my big toe on July 4th. A lot of my toes hurt from the fall, but an hour later, only the big one still hurt, especially when I pressed it. I got it x-rayed the next day, and it was indeed broken. The doctor said that it was non-displaced, so all I had to do was tape it to its buddy for 6 weeks using paper surgical tape, and wear a hard-soled shoe. I turned down the $30 hospital shoe and just wore my Tevas.

If the pain is still sharp, and not just sore tomorrow, it might be broken, but I doubt if there's much a doctor can do, except tell you how to best let it heal.

yea, what they all said. Playin soccer I've seen my share of broken toes. Nothing you can do. Ibuprofen, and try to stay off it.
