Jun. 7th, 2004 02:20 amOK, I have to ask. Is there anyone out there who has seen the HP movie, has not read the books, and thought it made ANY sense?
It sucked. Royal ass. The visuals were incredibly beautiful but took up tons and tons of camera time that was completely unecessary. A bazillion things were left unexplained that you don't notice if you've read the books but if you stop and think about it, they're really key to the development of the characters for future movies, yet have been omitted. A lot of things happened in the story that were left completely unexplained. I found myself going, "Why did Snape show up? Oh yeah, because he doesn't trust Lupin and is following him around."
The first movie stayed too close to the book and didn't work too well as a movie, imo. The second movie did a much better job even if their basilisk wasn't a basilisk. But this movie was a HUGE disappointment. I only hope they pull their act together for the next movie, and that JK Rowling kicks their asses.
The third book was amazing because it is when Harry starts to really mature. All three of the main kids undergo a great amount of character development, but this movie was so busy racing from start to finish that it skimmed over all of that. And still largely missed plot points.
A movie has several important legs to stand on. Plot, characterization, visuals, special effects, and acting to name a few. The acting had improved, the visuals were absolutely stunning, the special effects were fine, but the plot and characterization (both because of the way the script got written, or perhaps because of the way the thing got edited) bot stunk to high heaven.
Grrr.
In spite of my rantings, I'm glad I went. On my own. There's something exhilirating about being independent. About walking briskly to and from the theater, at my own pace, in the dark, in SoMa. Breathing the crisp night air and admiring the moon as it shines in the sky.
On my way home I felt I was truly alive in a fashion I often fail. I was fully present, and it was wonderful.

Date: 2004-06-07 07:09 am (UTC)Don't get me wrong, I really liked the third book overall, but the ending made relatively little sense even in written form.
Though you're right, getting rid of the parts it did really well to focus on the parts of the book that kinda sucked would still be a questionable creative choice :-)

I'm totally in the other camp. Hated the first two movies, adored this one. And I couldn't understand why other people liked the first movies or didn't like this one.
You gave a really good explanation of why. Thank you :).
