Has anyone heard anything good or bad about Curves?

I've been looking at joining a gym and someone mentioned they were supposed to be nifty, but they are not a normal, full gym... they're a fitness system that is aimed at women and supposedly helps them get fit/lose weight, plus a nutrition center that costs extra.

[livejournal.com profile] tikva has been going for a while now, and is very pleased with the results.

I have not personally visited them but it sounded interesting. The negative thing that I've heard about them (from a personal trainer, mind) is that they are a one-size-fits-all solution. Apparently, they put you on a circuit, so you don't really get to pick and choose your workout.

I don't have any experience with them; however, my sister goes to one and she lives in rural New England.

I wanted to comment that I notice this chain has been expanding like crazy. I keep hearing from friends all over about Curves. That expansion, in my mind, means they either need or have a lot of capital behind them. If they are, in any way, marginally funded, then could go out of business just as quickly as they've expanded. I wouldn't give them a lot of money up front for anything such as a yearly membership or long-term, multi-use contract.

Just being suspicious or cautious as experience with getting burned in this way makes one.

My Mom is a member and is try to get me to join. My mother has huge body image issues and really like working out there. I went last week in Sunnyvale. What I liked is that there where women with different body shapes. I guess that my way of saying I was not the only one with meat on my bone with a bunch of toothpick blonds. What I did not like is that my 30 min work out did not push as far as I wanted it. Go in and see if that is an environment that you feel competerable working out in.

...Well I just lost a really long detailed reply. To sum it up, I 've been going to curves and I really like it. There's a wide range of women highschool age to elderly, morbidly obese to underweight, completely sedentary to really fit. And everyone feels comfortable there. It's been a really welcoming place and the machines are quite flexible and extra great for those of us with cranky messed up joints. I've really enjoyed going with my mum. My only (personal) complaint is a lack of mirrors, but I can really understand why they're not there. I just miss being able to check my technique.
