Day report

It was one of those days where you're at the school to be there. They had an assembly that ran into lunch, so they started student council elections late, and so no one returned to classes until more than halfway through third period. Then, my fourth period class had already been given permission to go do their film projects in another class.

Still, I showed up early, complete with Algebra tests, and exam review packets for ALL of my classes. It's so nice to be prepared! I submitted the letters to the office to be mailed to the parents of the twelve students in my classes who are getting Ds or Fs (most of whom are salvageable to a D or C and in a few rare cases, to Bs).

On top of that, I showed up early so I could get photocopying done, then administered a test at lunch. Both of the students--students who have had difficulty in my class--got 92% on the test. Of course, it was the most basic algebra questions in existence, but I wanted to balance out the earlier material which has apparently been too easy.

On my way out of the classroom, one of my 11th grade students walked into the hall with a slice of pizza, and claimed it was for me. I laughed, and he said he really meant it! Apparently, he knew I was proctoring a test upstairs and figured I'd want a slice of the pizza from the assembly before it was all gone! I'm not sure if he was trying to kiss up to me, if he has a crush on me, if he just likes me, or if he's just a nice guy, or some combination of the above. But the pizza sure did taste good on an empty stomach! :)

One of the things that was bumming me out yesterday is that four of my students apparently showed up at the principal's office in tears the other day because I was a horrible teacher and hadn't prepared them for the Stanford Nine tests. Three of them are students that have been driving me crazy in class, so the principal suggested that they consider paying attention and shutting up. The fourth though I was sad to hear was upset. And of course the principal said that we don't teach to the test. Well, I just finished grading the Stanford Nines, and the girl in question scored in the 93rd percentile, at the Post High School level in Math. So much for her concerns (and a relief because I was a little worried to hear how poorly they felt they had done).

I ran into her on the way out of the school, so I explained to her how the Stanford Nine is designed and told her approximately how she had scored. She seemed relieved. yay!

All I have left for this school year, other than being present for two more weeks:
Grade Algebra I tests after they're written on Monday, double record stanford nine grades, write three finals, grade finals, record grades.

Once I'm done with that and the writing contract, I'll be able to take a break. A much needed break. w00t!

But for now, I'm going to bed. G'night world!

I (and possibly [livejournal.com profile] dragon_spirit if I can convince her to join me) will be needing a ride south to The Observatory sometime after 6 p.m., or at least a ride from BART. And then a ride home later that night, or a ride to BART before midnight.

Any takers/offers?
