So my ex primary, Claymore, is going to be in the LA area (45 minute drive or so from LA) this new years. He was thinking of somehow hopping up to SF for a few days to visit me.

I've looked into greyhound, which will cost 65 or 80 +18-20 hours of his live in travel time. It looks "ok". Anyone know anyone who may be interested in carpooling/splitting gas up from that area to arrive on Jan 3, late evening, and leave Jan 6?

Alternatively, anyone have any wisdom on commercial travel between the cities--what airlines to look into, for instance?

Air travel from LAX to SFO is usually around $100. Since the trip only takes about 1.5 hours, he might consider it worth his time to fly instead of greyhound. Don't know what the money situation is for him, though.

And also, according to travelocity.com, United has some $96.50 airfares from LAX to San Jose, on those dates. A lot of different times, too.

Greyhound.. ::SHUDDER::

SouthWest is a cattle call airline, but GODS it's convenient.
Fly Oakland to Burbank - both are smaller less busy airports, travel is a breeze. i just completed a TXkilling-day trek, and the travel was the *easy* part. lines never stopped moving. check your bags {odd that this saves time, but, you see..} you will be given a 1st group boarding pass and can get a "quick off" seat by the door. and though you must trek to baggage pick up, you're not lugging much.

i did Greyhound SF to SB RT twice. never. again. it's GODSAWFUL. the schedule looks fine, but you will be trapped on a Stinking Conveyance with Nutbags and Junkies trying to chat you up, and there WILL be stop-and-stop traffic at some point on the 5, and the restroom will be non-functional, and so-on-and-on. *shudders* nightmare trip. overnight. freakville. semi-consious. ripe people stench. AAAAAAAARGH!

flying takes one hour; bookend with airport time, three hours. three glorious hours. such satisfaction.. such freshness upon arrival!

Amtrak also runs a really nice train up the West Coast. I use to use it to get from San Jose to Chico, which kind of sucked because Chico is a middle of the night station for it. But it is (at least used to be) in the same ballpark pricewise as Greyhound, half the time, and 300 times more comfortable with room to walk around the train and so forth.
