I'm trying to find the cheapest place to buy a .ca domain name.

I'm wondering if there's any need to be buying from somewhere 'reputable.' They won't be hosting it, just registering the domain name.

Places I've found that have reasonable prices are:
netfirms.ca
nexx.ca
and
mydomain.com

These three range in price from $9-10

Domainsatcost.ca is actually more expensive than the three I listed. I'm wondering specifically if there's any reason to be worried about trusting the company I choose.

it's worth the extra $4 for domainsatcost. the guys who are selling for $9-$10 are selling /actually/ at cost, and thin margins mean unstable businesses. you do get what you pay for :/

You pay for "reputable" if you want to be able to keep the domain when it comes up for renewal. If it's high traffic, they have incentive to "lose" your payment and entangle you with red tape. And then squat on it.

incedentally, it's harder to do this with .ca domains than it is with other TLD's, because .ca's are deleted from the system 30 days after expiry, so they cant be held indefinitely, which .com's etc can be.

i dont know any of those companies, but it is indeed a good price. if you want to spend $20 for a company that i KNOW is reputable, buy one through bluegenesis.com (where i work, among other companies)

I'd go with Netfirms or someone like them. The problem with Nexx and Mydomain is they're not CIRA registered. CIRA (http://www.cira.ca) is basically the company that sets rules and regulations for domain name assignment. If someone is not on CIRA's list, you're likely buying from a reseller, who in turn has not agreed to any of the set principles that CIRA operates under. Additionally, CIRA has a full list of domain name registrars, and you can browse through them if you'd like. It's hard to say who exactly is 'reputable', but as was mentioned previously, even domain names can be a hassle if they're mismanaged. CIRA's a good indicator though. :)
