I'm looking at monitors from Acer, LG, Samsung, HP, and one from Viewsonic. Any thoughts on the quality of these guys? Longevity is particularly of interest.
The only useful input I can add is that there's one manufacturer out there that has really pretty color on their panels, and Lenovo and Samsung both use them to source the panels they put in their displays. Which is, I guess, a checkmark in the Samsung column. I've got a Samsung panel, but only had it for about a year, so no data on longevity yet. I've never had a ThinkPad display die on me.
We've had a few Viewsonic LCD monitors for a while, and are quite happy with them. Frequently they were good or best price/quality balance, and aside from 1 pixel dead on one of the screens, we haven't had problems with them. Caveat: I don't have comparison experience with other brands.
I've used Acer and HP. The HP didn't have as vibrant colors, but was much cheaper. The HP had issues connecting to my Windows machine and I never did find the right driver, after trying a few. This was 2.5 years ago, and both the acer and the HP work with Fedora Core 8 on my laptop. So.....no real info there most likely, other than "make sure it will work with your computer, and that you can return it if it doesn't".
You do get what you pay for; the good news is that LCD screens last longer than CRT screens, because they use less light, etc. Any of those brands should be fine, though I don't actually know anyone with an LG.
I've had a samsung since my first year of university and I've never had a problem with it. It's about 6 years old now and still being used without pixel drop out or any other problems.
