So, Will and I are talking about doing a wood working project together this summer: namely, a lingerie chest for me. If it goes well, I hope to eventually make a matching one to go with it, and then a desk/dressing table in similar style.

Patters for lingerie chests are few. Here are the ones we've come across so far...

This one is really cool, and the pattern is free. It's not the style I would normally choose, nor is it as tall as I would like. Also, I believe it is beyond our skill level by a long shot, though I suppose I could be wrong.
Richard Jones Chest of Drawers

The styling on this is slightly more what I had in mind, and I believe it is the cheapest of the for pay patterns... It would be nice to have the plans instantly, but I'm guessing that working from a pdf plan would be rather frustrating. Anyone done this before?
Lingerie Dresser

This one the styling is super duper boring, but could probably be altered to my tastes by adding attractive mouldings. Dunno.
Lingerie Chest Plans

This one is possibly the closest to the styling I have in mind, but it's nearly twice the price of the other options.
Lingerie Dresser Project Plan

Similarly close to what I had in mind, and only slightly more expensive that the other plans. But, hard to tell how it will look with just a sketch to show me.
Lingerie Chest Woodworking Plans

And the one by U-Bild might be available at Lee Valley, but it is very boring. Again, could be made nicer with the addition of pretty mouldings.

Any thoughts or advice would be more than welcome.

PDF plans can be turned into nice drawings by printing them on a plotter.
This is probably what whomever might mail you drawings is doing---nobody draws by hand anymore.

Really good advice! Why take the design from anywhere but inside you... My advice? Mix and match what you like from these. :-) Moni Q

yes, and don't limit yourself to chests of drawers -- if you get proportions you like, you can increase the size of, say, a nice jewelry chest.

And just remember -- measure twice, cut once.

The Taunton one that you liked doesn't seem much more exciting than the "boring" ones. Are you responding to the style of drawer-pull or the woodgrain? Both are entirely up to you, of course.

I suspect that the cost of the wood etc will well exceed the difference in cost between various plans. Also, don't forget to check out the FSC-certified lumber (only at Home Depot as far as I know) for less forest destruction.

Rona has certified lumber as well. At a lot of place, labelling is an issue though... it may be certified without being marked as such.

Woodworking used to be my thing but now I'm more interested in the chest than the drawers. Have fun with power tools, Dana.
