After today I have three weeks left at this internship.
That's 9 working days. Not much at all.

I feel like my head is clearing after a storm. I'm reaching some serious realizations about myself. I'm not convinced that I'd be happier working somewhere like this full time for good/reasonable wages than if I were working some crappy part time job that gave me my freedom and struggling to make ends meet. I've told others this a million times, but I need to tell myself this: I have to take control of my destiny and actually make the choices. Instead of being angry that I don't have a job 'in my field' that pays well, I should examine the options. Would I rather work at the symphony part time, freelance, teach skating, and squeak by, or have a full time job writing for a newspaper like the weekly that paid slightly better?
I'm not sure, but I wonder often if it is the former that I would prefer.

Today has been a surreal day at work. I was craving italian, but didn't know where I could get affordable italian in the area. Then it turns out that it is our publisher's 50th birthday. They're bringing lunch in for it. Pizza, I assume.

Nope. Lasagna, garlic bread, rolls, salad and cake. OK, no cake for me--not allowed--but I'll get my italian after all.

I sit down to eat my lunch and towards the end of the meal I hear loud noise.

The Stanford Marching Band came to serenade him. Woah. They played a good 3-5 songs. There were sexy dancing girls/cheerleader types, a conductor with an odd stick in a wig, a weird hat, striped pants and an odd jacket, a tree mascot guy careening all over the place, and of course, the band in all sorts of nifty odd amusing costumes.

I had no idea marching band was like that (so unconventional), and I think I now better understand why I know a lot of nifty ex-marching band types.

I couldn't stop smiling, it was so weird. People stopped on the street to watch. I had to bite my tongue to keep from making approving lecherous comments about the dancers. mmm.

I wonder what will happen next?

Well, back to work.
p.s. speaking of work... the deadline I thought I'd ruined by calling in sick last Friday got extended by a week, I have a new project but may not be getting any more articles before the internship is up because of all the little projects. w00t or something? Point being, its all quite manageable.

Have you talked to [livejournal.com profile] anthologie? She's the editor for the San Rafael News Pointer, a weekly newspaper in Marin. It's not the sort of place that's hiring or anything (they're losing money and have been for years), but I'd imagine you could ask her all sorts of questions and that she'd be chalk full of useful advice.

I saw the Stanford Marching Band in 1996 at BFD3, basically a whole bunch of popular bands playing 1 hour sets. Between some of the sets they'd march around the Shoreline belting out alternative and modern rock songs in band instrumental. The first thing they played, forever burned into my head, was Green Day (then at a very popular height on the radio). And their costumes were entirely outrageous (including one of the tubas painted with a huge yin-yang stretched down its throat). They're definitely one of the cooler (and most unconventional) marching bands around.
