My trip to Wisconsin
Sep. 17th, 2006 09:34 pmWe last left our heroine (moi, in case you were confused) after she feasted on sushi and toured Waukesha.
Saturday, I met
hellsop and
geekers for a sumptuous brunch. Afterwards, we drove around Milwaukee, making a point of driving through or stopping in the more hip, bohemian neighbourhoods, and also doing a drive-through of their goth club - apparently it is open 7 nights a week, but is VERY smokey.
Bay View looked interesting, but only sparsely gentrified (which fits into the description of up and coming). The East Side seemed much better developed, and Brady Street in particular came closest to reminding me of the areas I have always loved in various cities. The alternative culture here really does seem to centre upon cafes.
At 5 we met Jasmine and her husband at Tandoor for Indian/dinner. I wasn't very hungry yet, and the food was underwhelming. Oh well.
Afterwards, we headed back to the hotel for some hot tubbing. Our blissful freak stew was briefly interrupted by a bevy of about 12 teenagers (only two of which were girls). They looked to be about 14. They brought out a radio and turned it on loud. But apparently, hot tubbing with three geeky, freaky, overweight older people was not their idea of a good time. So, they left after only a few minutes. Ha! We win!
We socialized a while longer, and then parted ways.
Today I was supposed to meet with
lysandra and her partner for lunch. Unfortunately, she left me with instructions to call her when I got to her neighbourhood. Since I have no US cellphone, and don't fancy paying $5 for the call, and she didn't tell me their buzzer number, apartment number, or last name, and the payphones I was able to find didn't seem to work (or were hanging from wires), I gave up and bought 30 minutes of WiFi at WebWorks, a loca netcafe, in the hopes that she'd check her email and come find me. No such luck, and now my throat is traumatized from the smokey air there.
However, I was able to use that time to find a place that DOES have free WiFi, in Bay View (where I had hoped to spend a little more time), Sven's Cafe at S. Kinnickinnic and E. Russel/S. Logan. They have tasty sandwiches, free Wifi, cute goth geek boys to watch, friendly help, and tasty organic food. Yay! I'd been hoping to find Thai, but it's still good... and it's on the way to the airport, so I was even going in the "right" direction!
Given that plans didn't happen, it's been a good day! Especially since I woke up feeling depressed. I felt pretty good/cheerful when I wrote this post.
The flight left an hour late, however, and because I ate so late, I wasn't hungry for dinner until the plane was taking off, and so I got kinda crashy by the time the plane landed and snapped at the Wolf and Spryte. :( However, they were awesome, picking me up, taking me to Arcadia, and even bringing dinner in a tupperware for me! I have awesome sweeties. They take really good care of me.
Strange thing: Apparently the water in Waukesha is softened well water, which has come up through several miles of limestone. It has a flavour -- and it's a pleasant one! Weird, huh?
