I've been arguing (quietly, but when it came up) against first-past-the-post for a while now. I have a reasonably good idea (from reading international news) about how well various different systems have worked elsewhere.

So, I came into this whole referendum with an understanding of the issues, and how different solutions have worked. The proposed system -- MMP -- made sense to me.

Can you clarify what is meant by "my own research"? What sources are those choosing that option using?

I based it off ... a variety of sources? And that I'm not just basing my opinion off the limited information they're sending out or making publicly known. I've been looking into the options for MMP or other electoral systems since we first talked about it in a first year pol-sci class four years ago ...

Kind of what darkestembrace said. If, rather than seeing things in the media in passing, you went out and actively researched both in media, on websites, and elsewhere (example: reading wiki articles about systems, reading about how well the systems are working for other countries, etc.) then you've done your own research.

Huh. Well by that measure then it's my own research.

Me too, then.

what amazes me-- people complain that they don't have enough say in the election, and yet only 15% of the people turned up to vote when 50% voted in the last election!
